Our objective
is to recognize individual aspiration and achievement of students contributing to IT development in Hong Kong; to explore potential roles of students as stakeholders in IT education, and to promote the use of IT in everyday life.
Who can participate?
- All full-time secondary school students are encouraged to join the competition.
- Participants should have good track records in making a positive contribution to promoting the use of IT in their schools.
- Emphasis would also be given to candidates’ participation in IT-related activities/events/competitions.
- This is an inter-school competition, but more than one candidate can represent each school.
Deadline
Completed application forms should reach the Organizer by 3 July 2005. Application can be done by post [Address: PO Box No. 73945, Kowloon Central Post Office. Please mark “2005 Hong Kong Outstanding IT Students Award” on the envelope cover.] or email to [email protected].
Competition
First round
Candidates are required to submit an essay covering one of the following topics with not more than 1200 words in either English or Chinese.
Topic 1:
How can IT in communications help students learn effectively in secondary schools?
Examples of areas to write about:
- What kind of equipment/systems should be installed? (Hardware platform)
- What are the roles of the teaching staff/computer administrators/students?
- How to make a sound financial investment of IT in communications?
- How to enhance IT-based interactive teaching and learning for students, teachers and school
administration?
Topic 2:
Suggestions on measures of the mass media to promote IT education in Hong Kong
Examples of areas to write about:
- Comments or suggestions on current plans of IT education in Hong Kong
- What roles should the mass media take?
- How could the mass media better utilize its resources for IT education?
- What activities/events could be highlighted?
- How can lifetime learning in IT be achieved?
A self-introduction profile on the candidate’s achievements in IT and computer-related areas is also needed upon application.
Semi-finals
- Short listed candidates will be invited to interviews in which they will have the opportunities to express their views, opinions and visions on IT-related issues.
The best 10 will be chosen for the final round.
Finals
- Around 18 August 2005
Each finalist will participate in a discussion/presentation during a forum in which issues on IT education considered.
Assessment Criteria
The judging panel consists of respected personalities in the IT and educational sectors. The following criteria will be assessed:
- Contribution to the advancement of IT development and education in school (e.g., participation, promotion, organizing events and programs)
- Participation in inter-school events/competitions.
- Skill-based IT proficiency (e.g., programming, system & tools utility, multimedia design & creation)
- Aspiration and insight in IT-related aspects (Essay entries will be judged for their originality, creativity, insight and practicality).
How to participate?
- Students interested to join the competition should complete the application form available either from their schools or from the official web site of the organizer at http://www.jsecs.org.
- Participants should obtain endorsement from relevant school teachers or administrators on their application forms.
- Participants should submit the essay together with their self-introduction profile and necessary supporting documents with their application forms.
- Detailed instructions will be found on the application form.
